Tracking for intelligence

We monitor this show for buyer trends and product intelligence without exhibiting this year.

About the show

What it is, who attends

Biofach is the worlds leading trade fair for organic food and beverages, held annually in Nuremberg. Strict admission policy: all exhibitors must hold valid organic certification, vetted by IFOAM. Buyers expect documented certification and zero greenwashing.

Why it matters

When we add organic certification to the tea-bag operation, Biofach becomes the most efficient route to natural-products retailers and importers across DACH, Italy, France, and the Nordics. Until then we treat it as intelligence - tracking herbal-trend and packaging-material developments without exhibiting.

How it grew

36 years of editions, reshaped by changing buyer behaviour and category growth.

  1. 1990

First edition held at Ludwigshafen Stadthalle with 197 exhibitors and ~2,500 visitors. Founded by Hagen Sunder, Hubert Rottner, and Jurgen Ries to give organic producers a dedicated trade platform.

  2. 1999

Relocated to Nuremberg Exhibition Centre; grew to 1,276 exhibitors and 15,384 visitors in the first edition at the new venue.

  3. 2001

NurnbergMesse assumed full organisational control, professionalising logistics, international marketing, and the co-located Vivaness natural-cosmetics fair.

  4. 2010

Global expansion: Biofach World licensing model launched with editions in the Americas, China, India, and South-East Asia - turning the Nuremberg event into an anchor for a worldwide organic-trade network.

  5. 2021

First fully hybrid edition (physical + digital) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic; digital platform retained in all subsequent years to extend reach beyond the live event.

Floor plan

Halls and zones to know

Where tea, private label, and beverage buyers concentrate on the show floor.

Halls 1, 2, 4, 4A, 5, 6 - International organic food

Organic food and beverages from mainly international exhibitors covering raw materials, processed grocery, beverages (including tea and herbal infusions), fresh produce, and snacks.

Why it mattersTea and herbal-infusion brands from India, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and the Balkans cluster in these international halls. Key area for identifying buyers sourcing origin-led organic tea and for benchmarking international private-label-ready producers.

Halls 6, 7, 7A, 9 - German organic food

Organic food and beverages from mainly German-market companies including established tea brands (Yogi Tea, Lebensbaum, Sonnentor) and domestic natural-products specialists.

Why it mattersDACH retail buyers (Alnatura, Denn's, dm, Bio Company) concentrate here to meet their existing German-market suppliers. Understanding product positioning and packaging decisions made by these brands informs our private-label pitch to the same retailers.

Hall 9 - Planetary Health World

Special exhibition zone celebrating responsible nutrition with cooking demonstrations, talks, vegan innovations, and sustainability-positioned products.

Why it mattersFunctional herbal teas and wellness-positioned infusions are strongly represented. A useful observation point for trend direction without a stand commitment.

Hall 4 - Olive Oil World / Special Shows

Dedicated special exhibitions including the Olive Oil World with blind tastings and the Olive Oil Award. Hosts premium ingredient producers.

Why it mattersPeripheral to tea but illustrates the buyer-engagement format (blind tasting + award) that Biofach uses across categories - a model worth understanding for future product launches.

NCC Ost and NCC Mitte - Congress and Forums

Seven specialist congress forums: Biofach Forum, Retail Forum, Agriculture Forum, Sustainability Forum, Policy Forum, Science Forum, and STADTLANDBIO Forum.

Why it mattersThe Retail Forum and Policy Forum are the highest-value sessions for tea co-packers tracking EU organic regulation changes and DACH retail buying patterns. Admission included in trade ticket.

What to look out for

Best New Product Award - 12 categories voted by trade visitors

Trade visitors vote for their favourite new products across 12 categories at the Novelty Stand throughout the four-day event. Biofach categories cover fresh food, frozen food, grocery (cooking/baking), grocery (snacks/sweets), other grocery products, drinks, and non-food. Vivaness covers five cosmetics categories. The drinks category directly covers tea and herbal-infusion innovations. Awards are announced on the final day.

Biofach Congress - seven specialist forums over four days

The congress runs parallel to the exhibition with ~170 sessions across the Retail Forum, Policy Forum, Agriculture Forum, Sustainability Forum, Science Forum, STADTLANDBIO Forum, and main Biofach Forum. The EU Regulatory Update and Retail Marketplace sessions consistently draw 400+ participants and are the most tactically useful for private-label and co-packing operators tracking certification and retail buying shifts.

Start-up Pitches and Innovation Stage

Thirty-plus early-stage organic food companies present to buyers and investors on the Innovation Stage. The Start-up Award is voted by visitors and presented during the event. Useful for spotting emerging organic tea and botanical brands that may become clients or competitors within two to three years.

Country of the Year showcase

Each year Biofach designates a Country of the Year with a dedicated national pavilion. India held the 2026 title with 95 exhibitors from rice, spice, millet, and tea sectors. The pavilion concentrates origin-led organic suppliers and is a useful shortcut for buyers sourcing from that country.

BIOimSEH hub in Hall 7

A dedicated meeting platform for independent organic retail operators, providing a physical space for small-format retailers to connect with suppliers. Particularly relevant for understanding the independent health-food and organic-specialist retail channel that drives herbal tea volume in DACH.

Our take

Why we think buyers should weigh this show this way

Biofach is the most important organic trade fair in Europe and the single venue where DACH organic retail buyers (Alnatura, Denn's, Bio Company, dm) and international importers concentrate for four days each February. For a certified organic tea co-packer it would be a Tier 1 exhibiting priority. For us today it is a Tier 1 intelligence event.

Our tea-bag operation does not yet hold organic certification. EU Organic Regulation and IFOAM vetting block exhibition until certification is in place. We attend as trade visitors: tracking herbal-infusion trends, watching how established brands (Sonnentor, Yogi Tea, Lebensbaum) position compostable and PLA-envelope formats, and identifying which DACH retailers are actively expanding private-label organic tea ranges. The congress Retail Forum is the single most useful session block for understanding buyer expectations before we approach the same retailers through non-organic channels.

Once organic certification is secured, Biofach becomes a first-year exhibiting priority - likely a 12-18 m2 island in the international beverage halls, positioned around the single-format PT-2.33 bag and documented EU-regulation compliance.

FAQ

Common questions

Quick answers buyers ask before committing the travel budget.

  • No. Every product on the stand must comply with EU Organic Regulation or IFOAM guidelines, verified during the application process. Without certification for the tea-bag operation, we cannot exhibit. We attend as trade visitors to track buyer behaviour, packaging trends, and competitor positioning until certification is in place.
