Double Chamber vs Pyramid Tea Bags - a Buyer Guide
A B2B buyer guide to the two dominant tea bag formats - the double-chamber paper bag and the pyramid mesh sachet. Costs, sustainability, and what is actually premium.
If you are sourcing tea bags for a private-label brand, two formats dominate the conversation: the double-chamber paper bag and the pyramid sachet. Each has a place. Most of the marketing copy you will read is wrong about which.
The double-chamber paper bag
This is the format Europe drinks from. Lipton, Twinings, Teekanne, Pukka - all use variants of this format. The bag is folded into two chambers around a central seam, which doubles the infusion surface area exposed to hot water vs a single-chamber bag.
The construction is straightforward: non-heat-sealable filter paper, string, printable paper tag, and an outer envelope in OPP, cellophane, PLA, or paper compounds.
The pyramid sachet
The pyramid format gained ground in the 2000s as a premium positioning move. The visual cue is the bag itself - tea visible through a transparent mesh. Common in specialty tea brands, hotel premium tiers, gift boxes.
The catch is the mesh material. Until recently, most pyramid sachets used PET or nylon mesh - both petroleum-derived plastics. PLA mesh exists but is 3-4x the cost of paper and consumer perception of "compostable" is inconsistent.

We run only the double-chamber paper bag. We chose single-format discipline over multi-format mediocrity.
If your customer is buying from the premium tier of a European retailer - they expect the double-chamber. If your customer is buying from a gift box or specialty boutique with theatrical positioning - the pyramid may help.
